CaRe days 2016

On Thursday April 21 and Friday April 22 the CaRe-days took place in Veldhoven and Eindhoven. Both days attracted many participants from all four institutes.The PhD meeting on the first day was opened by the Scientific Director of the National Research School Care Onno van Schayck.
After welcoming all visitors, Marla Woolderink gave a presentation about the working relationship between PhDs and their supervisors. Louise Mennen gave an inspiring workshop how to give an effective presentation in your scientific field. After the break 3 parallel sessions were held where PhD students from all four institutes gave presentations to each other in the scientific field they share. The topics were decision-making/communication, movement sciences/rehabilitation and elderly care/ end of life care. Fiona Godlee, editor of the BMJ and Hilde van der Aa gave a masterclass on the best way to publish in journals like the BMJ. Fiona provided valuable views on the editorial process manuscripts are handled once submitted to the BMJ.

On the second day Fiona Godlee gave a fascinating presentation on scientific integrity of scientific articles. After the break Prof dr Rinnooy Kan, former chair of the The Social and Economic Council of the Netherlands (SER), and former chair of the National ResearchAgenda, talked about the possibilities of the National Science Agenda. His presentation was rounded off with a plenary discussion together with the scientific directors of the various institutes.After the lunch, the PhD students had lectures about the career-possibilities in and outside the scientific fields once they have finished their PhD trajectories. The senior members discussed possibilities for cooperation and new initiatives in a separate session.

The winner of the CaRe Award 2016 was Evelien Bijnen of NIVEL for her thesis called ‘Antibiotic treatment and commensal Staphylococcus aureus resistance in primary care in Europe – A nine-country study’. The jury was impressed with the novel research techniques she had used in her thesis and the societal impact of her research.Overall it was a successful and inspiring Annual meeting which for sure will be continued in 2017!
